5 out of 5 stars Excellent filters / system   March 19, 2010
J. S. Carr (Michigan USA)
I have 2 full years on this system last month. Water quality is *excellent* and much healthier. Be sure to put a charcoal filter on your shower too so you're not bathing in a cloud of chlorine every morning! (few people think of that but it's cheap and your hair will be noticeably softer too)

On city water my RO membrane slows down noticeably after 12-14 months. From what I understand I could push it longer but I'd rather err on the safe side.

I replace (these) carbon filters more like every 6-8 months, which helps keep the system peppy and the water fresh. I have not tried replacing the pre- filter on an earlier schedule than the post- but it sounds like a plausible idea. Or maybe even switch the two after 3 months and replace them both after another 3? (replace those 3's with 6's if your water is not too harsh to begin with)

Note that the filter life (esp for RO membrane) doesn't just kinda depend on water quality / pH, it's pretty much a sole function of your water. In other words the amount of wear on your filters from actually filtering water is negligible compared to the filters taking a 24/7 bath in your water's acidity/alkilinity (and if your water is about neutral your RO membrane will last waaaay longer). Since the filters (specifically the RO membrane) can't be dried out once you start using them the question is pretty much 100% how long they last in months rather than how many gallons they do. I think if you tried to use the system for commercial use with hundreds of gallons a day or something it'd be a different story, but obviously this system is not made for that.

Anyway- we just set up the RO faucet where our in-sink soap dispenser used to be and have been loving it ever since. My little boy has been asking for "yummy water" by name for years since (he's now 6). Dirt cheap compared to bottled water and you'll find that this tastes better than most bottled waters to boot!

4 out of 5 stars Smartwater filter system   August 26, 2009

This system is rated as one of the very best on the market (not GE propaganda) for getting the baddies out of your water. Problem is the cost which increases each year at Home Depot and the like. The filters only last around 6 months if you are on well water. I live in an area where the well water smells like poo and is very salty and this system takes away the smell and the bad taste.

5 out of 5 stars Great filter, great price, really easy to maintain   April 6, 2008

I've owned this for more than a year, and it has been totally trouble free. The install was pretty straight forward, and the water quality is excellent. The only thing I would suggest is replacing the first charcoal filter inline every three months, and the pair of charcoal filters every six. At a year the reverse osmosis filter is starting to clog, so it will be replaced next month. Overall I highly recommend this system.
