Amazon.com Review
Looking for a way to eliminate kitchen gadgets? Throw out the ones--like electric can openers--that use up more room and energy than the job requires. After all, if it's a good one, a manual can opener is perfectly suited for the work. This model easily fits the bill and isn't bad to look at either. With brushed stainless handles, it hides fingerprints, and the black accents on the turn knob and on the end of the handles give it a chic and functional look. --Sally Bergesen

3 out of 5 stars Attractive and sturdy, but a bit uncomfortable   February 11, 2008
I was looking for an attractive can opener, that could be easily cleaned.

Pros: Attractive design with a sharp blade that opens cans easily. Went through the dishwasher without a problem and came out shinny and clean.

Con: The handle isn't padded. It's slightly uncomfortable when I have to grip the handles while opening a can. If I had joint or dexterity problems this would be a real issue. I have small hands, perhaps people with large hands don't have as much of a problem.

I don't open many cans so I will continue to use it, but next time will look for an opener with a padded grip.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought but still decent   January 7, 2008

I bought these thinking they were 100% Stainless. They weren't. They were chrome plated steel and stainless. They do function well so all it not lost. The rusty chrome ones I replaced these with were the reason I wanted all stainless. The stainless portions are the handles and the cutting mechanism. The plate the mechanism attaches to is chrome. I prefer when a product is advertised as "Stainless Steel", that all metal portions of said product are Stainless Steel.

2 out of 5 stars opens cans well, pinches fingers, too!   March 23, 2005

I ordered this can opener, hoping that the "opening mechanism" is stainless steel. I haven't had it long enough to tell, but I'm suspicious "stainless steel" refers only to the handles. It hasn't rusted yet though, only time will tell ...

It, has, however, pinched the $!!^ out of my fingers, almost every time I've used it. The first time, pretty bad, as I was unsuspecting. The problem is, the handles aren't thick enough, so you have "enough finger" left to wrap around the bottom handle, and be sitting in the space between the handles to be pinched when the can lid gives way and the handles smash together.

Update - 2008-SEP ... I managed to get used to the skinny handles, no more finger pinching ... but the standard wheel, the part that opens the cans - rusts just like most other can openers.

When the can opener is closed, the space between the handles is only about 6mm! The handles should be angled, so the space in between gets wider towards the end of the handles (where your fingers will be). (The can opener is OPEN in the picture on Amazon.)

If the handles themselves were wider, your fingers couldn't curl around as easily.

I give this a 2 because, finger-pinching aside, it does open cans well and easily. Has a habit of tearing up the top of can labels, though, and trying to get label shreds in your food. Even though it opens well, this pinching business HURTS and I wouldn't recommend it, at all.

Update, SEP-2008 - managed to adjust to the skinny handles, no more finger pinching. But the little wheel, that opens cans, *does* rust, just like most other can openers.

I love this can opener. It works great for left or right handed people. It is really tough and heavy duty. I might buy another one in case this ever breaks, but I don't think it would be necessary. My husband likes it because it will chew through anything in seconds. It cuts like butter, and has a big gear and a good grip. The handles are nice and big so you can get a good grip on it, and it has a bottle opener on the top, which works great. I keep it in my favorite kitchen drawer.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST kitchen product purchase I have made!   July 24, 2001

This can opener is wonderful! It is very sharp so it opens cans so easily. Also, since it is all stainless, it can be cleaned in the dishwasher, which is the real reason I purchased it. When I my father used at my house he had to buy one for himself. I had been through two of the new "safe" can openers-one was manual which broke after a month or so of use and the other was an electric one which won't open but a few types of cans. So don't waste your money on those types. This can opener will be the last one you will need for a long time.
